ABOUT ART THERAPY

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses our innate creativity to explore and communicate our inner and often unconscious world.

Some clients don’t always find it easy to express themselves or their emotions in words.  Metaphor and the arts offer a creative way of exploring and expressing issues, relationships and feelings; shining a new light on patterns of behaviour that might not be so readily accessed by traditional talking therapies.

While art therapy can be a powerful therapeutic tool for people suffering with mental health issues, it can also provide a safe place to

·    explore emotional and spiritual growth

·    foster personal development

·    nurture a stronger sense of self

·    increase self esteem

·    contemplate important life-crossroads

·    find creativity and spontaneity.

As the world becomes more reliant on our left-brain logic and capabilities, we are neglecting our emotional right-brain engagement and moving further away from knowing how to explore our feelings and non-verbal processes.  Art therapy sessions provide a therapeutic place to discover and communicate with that less available/more hidden away side of ourselves, that we once accessed so naturally as children.

I believe that we carry our life’s stories in us mentally, emotionally, and physically.  At times, we can hold those stories in our bodies, out of our conscious awareness and it is through working with our creativity, as well as our breath and physicality that these narratives and our awareness can be unlocked.  Often, we have our own answers, we just don’t know how to access them.

The creative arts can help us find that key.

You don’t need to have any previous experience of art-making or be ‘good’ at art to engage with this work.  All that is required is a natural curiosity and a willingness to explore.

I can work across several art forms, including art images, paint, clay, sandtray, bodywork and breath.  However, I always take my lead from you.  Accessing your innate creativity in a safe and compassionate environment, can offer a new awareness and bring you fresh life choices and in turn, healing and change.

"The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance."

Aristotle
